US money basics
How do I build credit in the US if I have no credit history?
Start with an account that reports to the credit bureaus: usually a secured credit card backed by a refundable deposit, or a credit-builder loan from a credit union. Use it for small purchases, pay in full and on time every month, and a score generally appears after about six months of reporting.
Read the guideCan I get a credit card without a Social Security Number?
Often yes. Some issuers and many credit unions accept an ITIN instead of an SSN, and a secured card is usually the easiest to open. Confirm that the issuer reports to all three credit bureaus, because a card that does not report builds no credit history.
See the glossaryDoes checking my own credit score lower it?
No. Checking your own score or report is a soft inquiry and has no effect at all. Only a hard inquiry, which happens when a lender checks your file because you applied for credit, lowers a score slightly, and it stays on your report for about two years.
See the glossaryWhat is a good credit score in the US?
Most US credit scores run from 300 to 850. Lenders generally treat the mid-700s and above as strong, and the low 600s or below as a barrier to the best rates. There is no single cutoff, because every lender sets its own thresholds and different scoring models produce different numbers.
Read the guideHow long does it take to build a credit score from zero?
A score usually appears about six months after an account starts reporting to the bureaus, then strengthens over the following year or two. The two fastest levers are paying on time every month and keeping your balance well below your credit limit.
Read the guideWhy was my credit card application declined if I have no debt?
Having no debt is not the same as having a credit history. With no US credit file a lender cannot assess you at all, so the application is declined for being unassessable rather than risky. A secured card or a credit-builder loan solves this, because the lender is not taking a risk.
See the glossaryWhat is the cheapest way to send money to family abroad?
Compare providers on how much money actually arrives, not on the advertised fee, because most of the cost is usually hidden in the exchange rate. Digital transfers are consistently cheaper than cash pickup, and sending a larger amount less often lowers the percentage cost.
See the glossaryDo I have to file a US tax return if I only have an ITIN?
If you have US-source income or meet the substantial presence test, you generally must file, and the ITIN exists precisely so that you can. Filing also protects any refund you are owed, and an ITIN left unused on a return for three consecutive years expires.
